pen nibs & typewriters...

... Went into the Jewellery Quarter today ... this is a small, almost little-town-in-itself part of the big city of Birmingham. It's a really interesting and truly inspiring part of the city with a thoroughly authentic and historic feel. It has everything I love: art galleries, studios, architects & design offices (I always think they're groovy), wonderful old buildings, original signage and a super duper choice of bars, restaurants & cafes...

...however, none of that for us today, oh no!! We visited the little known & tucked away Pen Museum ...

Here's a little bit of info: at the height of it's trade, there were over 100 factories in what was then the heavily industrial city, supplying the world in this particular case with pen nibs. They made 1 nib every 2 seconds and supplied all U.S Schools and even Walt Disney's illustrators & animators...

...they also have an incredible collection of old typewriters (another favourite thing) AND, boxes and boxes of pen nibs. They look very pretty when all stacked up and some of them have lovely packaging and graphics ... Here are some photos so you can see too ... Enjoy! x

...Mmm, here is letter B for the alphabet project...

...not quite sure whether I'm done with it yet, and I'm not too sure what kind of alphabet this will end up being...all very much a work in progress!!... think I will probably work through all the letters (in however long it takes) and then look at them when they are done and have a good old tweak...

beautiful day...

... enjoyed the most beautiful day in a gorgeous garden with my little brown bears, some friends and the fuzzy, buzzy, busy bees ...

... and here are some photos of a few of the stunning plants that we came across, as well as the fuzzy, buzzy, busy bees and one of their little homes!

...the little 'niches in the wall are called 'bee boles' and they were built to house honey bee colonies. Each colony would have lived in a basket called a 'bee skep'. The bees helped to pollinate the fruit trees that once grew in the old orchard, ensuring good crops of apples and plenty of honey'...

Yay for bees! xx

a for aubergine...

A for Aubergine ©bee brown 2013
...One of the wonderful things about the MATS course (yes, I'm still talking about it ... that's how good it was!), is that I got to meet lots of like-minded creative types...

We've decided to start a bit of a personal group project, and create some designs for the letters of the alphabet, and then post them on our blogs (or wherever). There aren't any strict rules or deadlines, so whenever I get the chance, I'll pop mine here in the Design Hive...

Here's my beginning letter ... I saw some wonderful aubergines in the supermarket today and that's what gave me the inspiration for my 'A' ... still not really the weather for coats, but never mind...

'B' to follow, when it takes it's fancy...

officially, the end...

So here it is: my certificate of completion! I am very proud of this and of all that I have learned ... if you are thinking about doing it, go for it - it's super fab and yes, I'm still missing it!

Sorry I've neglected you blog, but have been a busy bee making a piece for the Lilla Rogers Global talent Search... got in in last night, phew! Will keep you posted... x

thank you...

'thanks' ©bee brown 2013
Just a little thank you to anyone from MATS who may be tuning in ... hasn't it been a blast? I loved, loved, loved every minute of it. Thank you for your company and making it just so darn brilliant ... and of course a HUGE thank you to Lilla and Beth. Fabulous-ness!

Have a splendid weekend x

zipper bags...

zipper bag snippet ©bee brown 2013
It's with a tiny tinge of blue-ness that I write this post today ... Lillaland part A is done and dusted, over and done with and just generally finito'd. It's been one of the most fabulous creative journeys I have ever been on and I will miss it. I am truly sad to see it go...

So, with that in mind, here is a little snippet of my last assignment piece for part A. We had to design zipper bags in the end, and you can just about make out one of my little collected envelopes!!

Oh well, at least there is still part B to look forward to... watch this space ... roll on September!... x

peter the pipe player...

'peter' ©bee brown 2013 Please do not copy!
There has been a lot of talk about Russia lately: I listened to an interview with Helen Dardik today (who is inspired by Russian folklore - that was courtesy of Lillaland - thank you!) ... my Ma and Pa have just returned from adventuring there (so photos and stories have been abound), and I have a very small collection of 'Nutcracker' dolls that I'm really into drawing at the mo...

Here is Peter the Pipe player ... he's very happy, loves the cold (and buttons!)...

I'm not getting very far with my week 5 assignment though ...

tiny envelopes & buttons...

We are looking at our collections of 'things' this week in Lillaland - it's all in the name of this weeks topic of learning about the gift market...

I like to collect things, but I'm imagining for the sake of this project, the things need to be relatively small, so I'm focusing on my love of collecting those small little packets, tags & envelopes that manufacturers give you with all the spare buttons & adornments in when you buy new clothes. I have found some lovely ones, even some with doilies inside! Of course, I love all the buttons too...!

Fairy Godmother Lilla wants us to scan, draw and generally make lots of little 'images' of the things in our collection which will then go towards our main assignment given tomorrow... where will it lead... watch this space... much fun!!
