paper houses...

'paper houses' {collage} ©beebrown 2013
so that's it, uploaded & homework given in... something a bit different for me in Lillaland but was great fun...

A combination of found objects including fabric, old paper, mesh, wood, buttons and old letters. Then I messed around with some hand-drawn/painted textures, stains etc, scanned them into my computer and messed around to see what results came up. Collaged it all together and here is the result... a really fun process as I had absolutely no preconceived idea AT ALL of what I was going to make...it took it's own journey...

It's the gift market on Monday... Yippee !!

mati-rose mcdonough...

This week in Lillaland, it's all been about painting, collage, textures, mark-making and using your own authentic voice to create something someone would want to put on their wall. Not such an easy ask! There was one must, and that was to include some floral motifs, oh, and to use a restricted colour palette according to you astrological sign: I was given yellow and pink.

Mine's almost done and will post soon...

But in the meantime there is this F A B U L O U S new book by one of Lilla's own artists, Mati Rose McDonough, which is jam packed with inspiration and lots of how-to guides. If anyone is unsure of how to make this kind of artwork then Mati Rose's book is sure to put you on the right path. Here's a quick link to Amazon: here ... happy creating!x

retro rummage...

It's now week 4 in Lillaland, and the next assignment has been given... This week it's all about Wall Decor and how to create fabulous (hopefully) work for this market...

Today's mini challenge is to raid and rummage all stores of, and then make a collection of, different textures, surfaces, fabric, round objects, linear objects and in fact anything that can be used to make a collage...

I took a quick trip out this morning to make my finds and also came across this brilliant second-hand retro mug manufactured by Portmeirion. Just love the pretty shapes made in relief and so thought I'd pop it here for you to enjoy too... Happy Monday!

a spider in my tummy...

'spider-man' © little bean 2013!
If you look very closely, you might be able to just make out a small, handmade spider inside this 'person's' tummy... this 'man and spider' creation was made by the Small Bean in our family on his bedroom carpet ... he doesn't seem to mind that there is a spider in his tummy, so Little Bean tells me, in fact, he's rather happy about it...

Personally, it's the hair I'm after...!

On another note & somewhat surprisingly, Cedric went down a bit of a storm with my classmates on my LillaLand course... it would seem that being grumpy can make you popular!!

Its the scoop on Wall Art next week...watch this space! x

grumpy cedric...

... here is Cedric in full grumpy version. He's a pretty unhappy little fella who spits at the world and hides underground a lot! Hope he's looking fed up without looking scary - he's supposed to be miserable and cute, but I just don't do miserable & cute...!

Roll on tomorrow!

cedric...

... is the name of my chosen snail... he's going to feature on the front cover of a book!!! (not a real one, sadly, but never mind...) It is of course some rough work for our week 3 assignment from Lilla Rogers: ... to illustrate a cover for the title "The Snail and the Rose Tree" by Hans Christian Andersen.

It is a rather dark and sad tale, and quite cryptic too so not too easy but lots of fun ... have to see what turns the artwork takes...

Still, children to bath, so toodlepip for now x

albert aquino...

We are now at the beginning of week 3 on the 'Make Art That Sells' course run by the fabulous Lilla Rogers...

The area we're getting the scoop on this week is children's books, so in honour of this, I thought I'd post some pages from one of my all time favourite  kids vintage books, 'Arty the Smarty' illustrated by Albert Aquino. This was first published in 1962 by Wonder Books...

Printed in just 2 colours and using the white of the page, Aquino really shows us what you can do to create brilliant illustrations with such a limited palette... The combination of the simplicity of his line work and palette goes to make great characterisation, delightful shapes, lovely pattern detail and great texture... Just fabulous storytelling! Enjoy...

By the way, the subject for our mini-assignment today?.... snails...!!! x

retro vibe in my kitchen...

'yummy in the kitchen' ©bee brown 2013 - please do not copy
This week has just flown by... Lilla Rogers gave an incredible review by recorded Skype  of all our fabric work from the first assignment on Tuesday. I came to the conclusion that my design still had a bit more of a journey to make, so here it is in it's next stage...

Not quite sure if I've finished tweaking it yet, but it'll do for now... learning so much and hey, it's raining outside again so it's not as if there is anything else to do...!!

It's children's books next week...

Have a fun weekend... x

Hello Thursday! Well here is one of my layouts for this weeks assignment to design a collection of plates featuring odd pods (well a very simple version of it, this design has moved on a bit since it was at this point...)

The MATS course is getting better and better and I'm just loving it - so much fun!!

But so much else to be getting on with.... At least this is one plate that's nearly finished spinning!

Odd pods & Mushrooms...

'Yummy in the Kitchen' ©bee brown 2013
We are now into week 2 of the 'Lilla Rogers' MATS course and it is brilliant beyond belief! Loving every minute of it....

Lilla has an amazing way of teaching, leaving so much room open for personal interpretation and having fun...

Last week we were into 'retro mushrooms' for bolt fabrics & this week it's 'odd pods' for home decor.

Back in the hive...

Phew, what an amazing day it's been...

Today was the first day of the 'Make Art that Sells' course taught by the fabulous Lilla Rogers (you can find out more here), and as well as working away on our first mini-assignment, there have been lots and lots of wonderfully talented new classmates from all over the globe to get to know too... Really looking forward to day 2...

(By the way, I'm really into buildings and doorways at the moment so thought it would be good to post some snaps of some gorgeous ones taken whilst on hols...)
