bee houses...

… Just a quick 'in-between' post for you today…One of my christmas pressies was a 'Happy Bee Box' and a picture of it sits bottom right in this little montage that I have put together for you… It's becoming more important to look after our bees and so I'm beginning the New Year on a small mission (amongst other things) to do what I can to protect just a few & give them a safe place to have a little snooze…I think the houses are very inspiring to look at too… the combination of the natural colours, textures, shapes and found materials is gorgeous... Hope you enjoy them!

…and for 2014 I am going to add something a little different to my regular postings… At the beginning of each month there will be a feature to look out for that is completely 'Bee' inspired … hope you'll watch out for the 'Bizzy Buzz' posts … see you soon! xx

vintage tree …

vintage tree ©bee brown 2013
… really feel like the preparations for christmas are well under way now… our tree is up and decorated by none other than the Big and Little Bean… with beautiful vintage glass and hand-painted baubles given to me by my lovely mum-in-law… She was having a clear out and asked if there was anything we would like… how could I refuse?… They are all hanging in the kitchen too…(I put them in the strangest of places!!) … xx

christmas pressie tags…

…my little design hive has come a long way since I first began posting back in February, and as a way of saying thank you to all of you who have been supporting me on my busy bee adventures this year, I have created some free, download-able Christmas pressie tags! Hope you like them! If you would like to print them just use the following steps:

1. click on the image that you would like to print…

2. copy it to your desk top…

3. print as many on your home printer as you would like, for free!

… I'm hoping that 2014 will bring lots more fun and inspiration into the hive, and I'm also hoping there will be some projects that I have been working on this year that I will be able to share with you too… so, in the meantime, happy present wrapping and
T H A N K  Y O U…! Have fun xx

pinch me!...

… wowzers! something totally amazing to share today … my work (and a few of my words!) are being featured in the latest edition of FLOW magazine… here are a couple of pages from the Dutch edition with the International edition becoming available early next year. This is just incredible beyond belief and I feel so very fortunate for this exposure and to be featured among the pages of such a beautiful magazine...

… I was contacted by one of their lovely journalists last year whilst they were putting together a spread all about the amazing Lilla Rogers and her MATS course. Thank you so much Lilla and Flow… may it lead to lovely things. xx

glitter birds...

… now that it's December, we can officially start to get all excited about Christmas … Oooh lovely! I'm just starting to gather some inspiration for decorating our tree (we always have a real one because they just smell so beautiful & always put it up 2 weeks before the big day), & fancy the idea of adding some glittery birds into the usual mix… found these at vvrouleaux … just so gorgeous & sparkly… xx

marvellous movember ...

'max' ©beebrown 2013

… the Big Brown Snr. works away in the wonderful land that is Germany from time to time, and as they have just celebrated the 2013 World Beard and Moustache Championships over there in Leinfelden-Echterdingen, I thought it would be a good excuse to make a little drawing and celebrate the Championships on the blog...

…so, if beards and moustaches are your thing (or the thing of your other half), then their website is charming and full of the most wonderful facial hair inspiration you could possibly ever be after...

… well it is Movember after all, and I do love me a bit of beard…

… in the meantime, have a fab bonfire night - here's to mulled wine, muddy boots, smoke-smelly clothes, jacket spuds, hot-dogs and lots of bangs and whizzes! have fun …! x

sidney snowman ...

'sidney snowman' ©bee brown 2013
... some things don't change I'm pleased to say, and Lillaland is most definitely one of them ... still amazingly awesome with so many new, fun and exciting things to learn ...

... weekend posts aren't usually given in Lillaland, but an exception to the rule today was a weekend post including an icon drawing class given by none other than the mega talented Suzy Ultman ... she goes down as one of my all time favourite design heroes, so for me it was quite wonderful to get a little teaching session with her as well as more insight into her background, methods and design preferences ... well, I got to work drawing up a few little snowmen icons based on Suzy's practices, and along with some other little characters, came up with 'Sidney'... and whilst he isn't up to Suzy standards, I rather like him!   Thank you Suzy! xxx

painted claudette ...

'claudette' ©beebrown 2013
... i'm not totally sure why the urge to pick up a paint brush gripped me tonight, but it did. I don't think I've picked up my paints and brushes for over 8 years (how long....?), so it felt very awkward painting Claudette at first, (she is what popped out of my head & onto the paper) ... but, during the process, I came to realise just how much I've missed it and how utterly relaxing it is to calmly sit and paint. So different to the digital work that I have been creating so much of lately.

... I've clearly forgotten quite a bit too ... my colours are quite dull (the camera shot has made them look brighter) and my hand isn't as steady as it once was... nothing I suppose some practice won't put right, but I think as the nights continue to draw in, practice is what I shall do, and who knows, maybe in time when I've got the knack back again, I might mix it with a bit of digital, techie wizardry to new affect!

and the winner is ...

© Zoe Ingram 2013
... a very big congratulations goes out to Zoe Ingram, a fellow MATS classmate, who is the winner of the 2013 Global Talent Search! Zoe is living in Australia and you can find out more about her work here. The winners were announced yesterday on Lilla Rogers blog and all the details can be found here too!

... well done Zoe! x

just around the corner...

'autumn' ©bee brown 2013
... our garden isn't quite full of these beautiful autumnal colours yet, but it won't be long and the trees will be full of gloriously and gorgeously coloured leaves... the acorns are already dropping and soon both the Big and Little Bean will be out collecting their conkers ... all the animals will start to busily prepare for Winter ... it's all just around the corner and I can't wait...my absolute favourite season of the year... nothing beats the hazy glow of autumnal mists and sunshine ... there will be pumpkins and soup, witches and goblins, fireworks and bonfires ... roll on Autumn, it's going to be a good one!

sick as a bird, or is it parrot...?

'sick as a parrot' ©beebrown 2013
... hello blog! I'm so sorry it's been such a long while since I've posted. I haven't forgotten you but we've all been as sick as parrots in my family... hopefully that's it for the Winter now (I can live in hope), as we all can't stand being ill and are quite miserable and rubbish at it...

... never mind. Lots of lovely drawing to be getting on with now, and guess what? Only 2 and a bit weeks until Lillaland Part 2 begins!!! Hurray!!! Now if that's not enough to make you want to jump and down, then I don't know what is....!

Toodlepip! xx

fishy fish ...

... came across a lovely shop selling tinned fish whilst on my travels... all sorts of fishy fish: tuna, sardines, lobster and in lots of edible forms too: pates and soups to name but a couple (yummy) and in gorgeous packaging to boot...

... sadly I can't share what's in the tin, but I can share some of the graphics, so here they are!

... but, if you would like to try what's in the tin, you can because to my surprise, there is an online shop! It's here! Enjoy!

... have a lovely weekend!

happy bird...

'bird & pretty painted tin', bird ©beebrown 2013
... I came across some painted tin bird-scarers nesting quite happily amongst some flowers in a garden whilst on my recent travels ... I spotted them originally because I loved the colour combos and thought they'd make some good palette ideas ...

... but, I do believe that if I was a bird, the 'bird-scarers' wouldn't actually scare me off... oh no! ... Infact, they would have the opposite effect and make me want to sit on one, in the sunshine, all day .... happily!!

find some more of me ...

... I've signed up on the MOYO directory ... it feels very exciting ... if you fancy, you can check it out here ...

... and, if you have a few minutes spare and even fancy 'loving' me, you can do that there too!! Just click on the pink heart on the profile page! I'd be ever so grateful as the more hearts I get, the more chances I've got of getting some new work come my way and that would make my day... Enjoy xx

... lovely to be back home again after some wonderful travels and adventures ... here are just a few little interesting gems from sneeking around the odd corner and up some quiet alleyways ... nice bit of lettering too!

'Caravan' ©bee brown 2013

Toodlepip and I'll be back in the hive soon! Have fun! xx

the final 50 ...

playground journal snippet ©bee brown 2013
... the semi-finalists were announced for the 2013 Lilla Rogers Global Talent Search today. There were over 1500 entries from 30 countries across the world... wow, some competition and some stunning work! You can check out the final 50 on Lilla's blog, here.

...and here also is a tiny snippet of my entry for the first round. We were briefed to come up with a design for a journal cover on the theme of playgrounds for Paperchase as the client.  I absolutely loved creating this piece of work as the brief pushed me and stretched me to make something I wouldn't usually have made...

...although I haven't made it through to the second round - I know I'm just not ready for the big-time yet (but hopefully one day), I have a great piece to add to my portfolio and now even feel inspired to get going on my website ... I have learned and continue to learn so much ... exciting times ahead, watch this space ...!

pen nibs & typewriters...

... Went into the Jewellery Quarter today ... this is a small, almost little-town-in-itself part of the big city of Birmingham. It's a really interesting and truly inspiring part of the city with a thoroughly authentic and historic feel. It has everything I love: art galleries, studios, architects & design offices (I always think they're groovy), wonderful old buildings, original signage and a super duper choice of bars, restaurants & cafes...

...however, none of that for us today, oh no!! We visited the little known & tucked away Pen Museum ...

Here's a little bit of info: at the height of it's trade, there were over 100 factories in what was then the heavily industrial city, supplying the world in this particular case with pen nibs. They made 1 nib every 2 seconds and supplied all U.S Schools and even Walt Disney's illustrators & animators...

...they also have an incredible collection of old typewriters (another favourite thing) AND, boxes and boxes of pen nibs. They look very pretty when all stacked up and some of them have lovely packaging and graphics ... Here are some photos so you can see too ... Enjoy! x

b for buttons & birds...

B for Buttons {& birds} ©bee brown 2013
...Mmm, here is letter B for the alphabet project...

...not quite sure whether I'm done with it yet, and I'm not too sure what kind of alphabet this will end up being...all very much a work in progress!!... think I will probably work through all the letters (in however long it takes) and then look at them when they are done and have a good old tweak...

... all inspired from my trip to the beautiful gardens, here is my 'new birdie'. He's very pleased to meet you, he's just a little shy...

Thursday, 25 July 2013

beautiful day...

... enjoyed the most beautiful day in a gorgeous garden with my little brown bears, some friends and the fuzzy, buzzy, busy bees ...

... and here are some photos of a few of the stunning plants that we came across, as well as the fuzzy, buzzy, busy bees and one of their little homes!

...the little 'niches in the wall are called 'bee boles' and they were built to house honey bee colonies. Each colony would have lived in a basket called a 'bee skep'. The bees helped to pollinate the fruit trees that once grew in the old orchard, ensuring good crops of apples and plenty of honey'...

Yay for bees! xx

a for aubergine...

A for Aubergine ©bee brown 2013
...One of the wonderful things about the MATS course (yes, I'm still talking about it ... that's how good it was!), is that I got to meet lots of like-minded creative types...

We've decided to start a bit of a personal group project, and create some designs for the letters of the alphabet, and then post them on our blogs (or wherever). There aren't any strict rules or deadlines, so whenever I get the chance, I'll pop mine here in the Design Hive...

Here's my beginning letter ... I saw some wonderful aubergines in the supermarket today and that's what gave me the inspiration for my 'A' ... still not really the weather for coats, but never mind...

'B' to follow, when it takes it's fancy...

officially, the end...

So here it is: my certificate of completion! I am very proud of this and of all that I have learned ... if you are thinking about doing it, go for it - it's super fab and yes, I'm still missing it!

Sorry I've neglected you blog, but have been a busy bee making a piece for the Lilla Rogers Global talent Search... got in in last night, phew! Will keep you posted... x

thank you...

'thanks' ©bee brown 2013
Just a little thank you to anyone from MATS who may be tuning in ... hasn't it been a blast? I loved, loved, loved every minute of it. Thank you for your company and making it just so darn brilliant ... and of course a HUGE thank you to Lilla and Beth. Fabulous-ness!

Have a splendid weekend x

zipper bags...

zipper bag snippet ©bee brown 2013
It's with a tiny tinge of blue-ness that I write this post today ... Lillaland part A is done and dusted, over and done with and just generally finito'd. It's been one of the most fabulous creative journeys I have ever been on and I will miss it. I am truly sad to see it go...

So, with that in mind, here is a little snippet of my last assignment piece for part A. We had to design zipper bags in the end, and you can just about make out one of my little collected envelopes!!

Oh well, at least there is still part B to look forward to... watch this space ... roll on September!... x
